I’m going to assume that you’re familiar with atwo-minute masterpiece created by Will Ferrell and Anchorman director Adam McKay called The Landlord.
Debuting in 2007, it was created with no budget, and was the first creation of Funny or Die that pretty much put that site on the map as a force in the then-new field of Internet video.
Plus, it’s freaking hilarious, due in large part because of McKay’s two-year-old daughter Pearl, who starred as the landlord and became aworldwide sensation.
She didn’t go the child actor route though, with her parents deciding to turn down the offers so she could have a normal childhood, relatively speaking.
But now at twelve years old, Pearl has publicly resurfaced with an exclusive interview in Vice.
The whole thing is worth a read, but some highlights are that even though she doesn’t really remember filming the whole thing, she does rememberpeople being starstruck by her Internet fame.
When asked how she thinks comedy has changed since The Landlord came out, she responded:
“Today, I think all the social medias have different types of humor. Awhile ago adults would go, ‘Oh, a two-year-old swearing, that’s hilarious,’ but now I think that would only appeal to maybe a nine-year-old. I don’t really find it funny.
Also, grownups will find humor on stuff like The Walking Dead. Anything my parents like they’ll find something funny about it. I don’t know how they do it. My mom will be like, ‘Breaking Bad, that’s such a funny show. I love it.’ But it’s actually not such a funny show.”
So what makes her laugh the most?
“Anything in the moment,” she said. “Like a YouTube video or something. I like BuzzFeed a lot. I mostly watch that.”
